Order to seize Alex Baldwin's phone in Rust shooting

Amid the ongoing investigation into the Rust movie shooting, Santa Fe police have issued a warrant for the seizure and search of Alec Baldwin's phone.

Investigations into the Rust shooting have been ongoing since the incident first took place on October 21, 2021.

During the filming of the Western, Rust, in New Mexico, a pistol held by Baldwin went off, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin believed it to be a cold gun, but the gun was later found to be loaded with a live bullet. At the moment no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing and new developments continue to emerge.

The investigation has so far uncovered a possible explanation for how the live ammunition got to the set in the first place. A supplier, Seth Kenney, was supposed to supply blanks and dummies, but it is possible that he sent recycled real bullets.

While the source of the ammunition can be answered, the investigation has yet to determine how the weapon came to be loaded with live ammunition and went unnoticed by all.

More answers may come after Rust Deputy Director David Halls was subpoenaed and asked to meet with officials after avoiding Osha interviews. Halls isn't the only one who has been asked to give more information about the incident.

Negative

As Deadline reports, Santa Fe police have asked Baldwin to turn over his phone as part of the Rust shooting investigation. Although Baldwin has been cooperative with police, his attorneys had refused to release the phone without a warrant.

It has now been issued and approved as police establish probable cause to seize the phone.

The phone will be searched for any evidence related to Hutchins' death, after interviews with witnesses suggested emails and text messages related to the production of Rust may have been sent.

It remains to be seen what information, if any, is found on Baldwin's phone. With such scant details one can only speculate on exactly what police expect to find on the device.

Baldwin's attorneys have issued their own statement indicating that their decision to hold the phone pending a court order was simply to protect Baldwin and the family from him.

They hope that if anything is found on Baldwin's phone it will be to prove that he is not civilly or criminally liable for the incident.

While Baldwin and his lawyers continue to defend his innocence, the police seem equally convinced that he has something that necessitates the seizure of the phone.

There is no evidence yet that there is anything incriminating on Baldwin's phone, but the fact that the police have reason to believe there is is an interesting fact. Although details are scant, police have pointed to possible emails and text messages related to the Rust incident.

At the moment, multiple lawsuits have been filed against Baldwin, who has come under heavy scrutiny since the incident. Rather than remain silent during the investigation, however, Baldwin has chosen to publicly address the incident in multiple interviews.
