The municipal register represents a list of the people who live in a locality and contains information about them such as the name, surname, postal address or identity document number. But it is a registry whose procedure arouses many doubts among citizens.

One of the most common has to do with the number of times we can change the pattern, as well as the time that has to pass between procedures and other. To discover the answer, we went to the Requisitos.me web portal, specialized in public administrative procedures and directed by the lawyer Diego García.
"There is no limit to the number of times you can change your registration. If you are a person who moves frequently, you must do so each time you do so. It is a mandatory process and it is important that you keep your address information up to date and validate your new residence address", says this expert. In addition to the obligation that it entails, having the register updated allows access to benefits of the locality itself and of a municipal nature. Among other things, recalls García, "it is a requirement to carry out other procedures such as registration in social security or children in school."
In other words: registering is legally obligatory every time we move to a new house or home, even if this stay is temporary, and regardless of the time that has passed since the last procedure. The good news is that, unlike what happened years ago, the registration procedure can be carried out both in person, by appointment, and completely online, which is much more practical on most occasions. In both cases, however, the same documents are needed to register the new padron.
Among them, according to the specialists of Legalitas, we find the registration application, the valid documents that prove the identity and the documents that prove the use of the house. The first corresponds to a register sheet available online and in the citizen service offices of the town halls. The latter include the DNI or passport for those of legal age, the DNI and the family book for those under 18 years of age, and the family book or birth certificate for those under 14. As for the latter, they serve the rental agreement, deeds or a utility bill.

But the procedures do not end when the new register is formalized. In reality, there is another associated task that must be carried out, as explained by the lawyer Rómulo Parra: "You should go to the Primary Care Center that corresponds to your new address so that they register you there. Otherwise, you would have to continue being cared for in the previous Primary Care Center, which can be very inconvenient for you". In addition, the change of register does not imply an automatic change of school or public institute, but it is necessary "to process the change in the new school or institute before the educational authorities of the municipality".
