Social work: a bridge between patients, doctors and family

The Covid-19 pandemic showed that life can change in all its aspects from one moment to another.Humanity faced an obligatory and preventive confinement, the people who became ill of the virus had to be isolated and separated from their loved ones, had to cling to their faith and trust the medical staff who with vocation and love put themselves in the front line; However, families maintained the uncertainty for knowing the health status of the patients and that is when, in the IGSS, the Department of Social Work of the Sub -Management of Pecuniary benefits is put in the work.

Esmeralda Girón, supervisor of Social Work at the IGSS General Hospital, told the work experience in that unit and recalled that in the first months of the pandemic the team was working in shifts, as a prevention measure, but still soThey fulfilled various functions and they still do not explain how the day reached them to fulfill all their tasks.

But the work day of social workers did not end there, later they had to do another tour in the services, for any urgent need to contact families when the medical diagnosis was discouraging, especially when it was necessary to do a special procedure, the family had itto authorize.

Other social workers had the assignment to go to the morgue to update the registration of those who dawn and with the nursing listings the families were notified to start with the procedures “if they were not located we were in person to look for them in theirHouse, many times families did not take care and were friends who did the special procedures, all this with the pressure that there were only a few hours to make the bodies, ”Girón recalled.

The Covid-19 pandemic allowed people to manifest their most human and solidarity side, social workers accumulated a series of experiences, such as the challenge of putting the security suits level three, in order to have direct contact with positive patients, many believed that their relatives had abandoned them, so they implemented actions such as asking for letters, photographs and other details that made the patient motivated and loved. The social workers read the letters to the patients who did not know how to read or who had difficulty seeing, and because of the suit it was difficult for them to listen to "we had to shout and ended up without voice (sic), but it was satisfactory," he said.
