USA warns that economic sanctions to Russia would be more severe than in 2014

The United States warned Moscow on Tuesday that, if Ukraine invades, it will face faster and more severe economic consequences than when Russia annexed the Ukrainian Peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

"We are prepared to implement sanctions with mass consequences that were not considered in 2014," said a national security official to journalists in Washington and explained: "That means that the gradualism of the past was over. And this time, we will start at the top of the scale and stay there ”.

The official said that the United States "is also prepared to impose new export controls" to hinder the Russian economy.

“You can think of these export controls as commercial restrictions at the service of the largest national security interests of the US.UU.”, Added the official."We use them to prohibit the export of Russia products".

The president himself, later, in an informal exchange with journalists, said that he is even imposing sanctions to President Vladimir Putin in case the Kremlin invades Ukraine."Yes, I would contemplate," the president replied when asked about the matter.

The Biden Administration spokesman said that if President Vladimir Putin “step back and observes the global domain of American software technology, the export control options that we are considering - together with our allies and partners - would affectPutin's strategic ambitions to industrialize its economy with enough force, and would harm areas that are important for it, either in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, defense or aerospace or other key sectors ”.

The United States and its allies imposed less severe economic sanctions against Moscow after their Crimean taking, but finally were ineffective and the peninsula remains under Russian control. Now the Kremilin has deployed about 127.000 soldiers along the Ukrainian border.
